
Four students of Andhra University called off their indefinite hunger strike on Tuesday, the 12th day at the King George Hospital where they were admitted on the fourth day of the fast.
The four students, T. Kumar, R. Ravindranath, Y. Raja Rao and B.V.D.L. Narayana, gave up the fast after Collector J. Syamala Rao and Commissioner of Police N. Sambasiva Rao offered them lime juice.
Superintendent of KGH M.V.R.J. Somayajulu, RMO B. Bangarayya, Congress leader Koyya Prasada Reddy and others were present.
Earlier Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy called them to give up the fast and participate in the agitation for a unified State in a peaceful manner.
Health of the four students caused concern as they refused to break their fast all these days.
However, Dr. Somayajulu said once they start taking food they would become normal. Recovery would be quick in the case of youngsters, he said. They were all examined before being discharged and their condition was stable. They were given dietary advice.
One of them, Mr. Kumar, who is suffering with jaundice was also in a stable condition.
His blood samples have been sent to Mumbai for tests. The student would be treated at the hospital.
Mr. Syamala Rao and Mr. Sambasiva Rao appreciated the students for heeding their request to call off their fast. Telugu Desam Polit Bureau member Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and others met the students before they left the hospital.
Earlier Mr. Ramakrishnudu and other party leaders visited the relay hunger strike camp of joint action committee in AU campus. With Christmas-Sankranti vacation starting on Wednesday the campus was almost empty.
Most of the students stay in hostels and almost all of them have gone to their native places. AU administration has postponed the examinations.
TDP’s Floor Leader in the GVMC Nalluri Bhaskara Rao, Deputy Floor Leader Kona Tata Rao and Corporator G. Amar commenced indefinite hunger strike in the party’s relay hunger strike camp opposite GVMC. Mr. Ramakrishnudu inaugurated the indefinite fast camp.
Advocates who are conducting a relay hunger strike camp near the District Courts Complex premises for the last five days, took out a motorcycle rally and offered “poolabhishekam” to the statue of Potti Sreeramulu on the beach road.
Mr. Ramakrishnudu and TDP leaders visited the camp to express their solidarity. Advocates of Gajuwaka are also conducting a relay hunger strike camp.
Students of Narayana, Chaitanya, MVR and Margadarsi colleges took out a rally in Gajuwaka area. Leaders of political parties also joined them. Gajuwaka Merchants’ Association also organised a procession.
At Narsipatnam, TDP senior leader Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu said the party would support the call for a bandh on December 27, given by the joint action committee of students of Seemandhra.
At Paderu the all-party JAC organised a half-naked demonstration near Ambedkar statue. Bheemunipatnam MLA M. Srinivasa Rao visited the relay hunger strike camps at Anandapuram junction and near Ambedkar statue at Tagarapuvalasa to express his solidarity. He also flagged off an autorickshaw rally and later participated in a street cleaning programme along with Municipal Chairperson A. Vijaya Nirmala and Councillors.
