Charging the state government with ruining the power sector resulting in acute power shortage in the state, the opposition parties led by TDP on Tuesday staged a dharna in front of the Assembly.

The demonstration highlighted the problems the common man and the farmers in the state were facing.Apart from displaying placards and flexiboards saying CM ki power ledu,Rashtram lo current ledu (CM has no power and the state has no power supply),the members displayed dummy transformers, burnt motors, and half-dried crop. The women members washed clothes and used the high tension transmission lines to dry the clothes.

Addressing the members,TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu took the government to task saying that because of its short sightedness it had pushed the state into darkness. The state government in the last five years had only been targeting the opposition but did nothing to improve the transmission and distribution system nor did it take advance measures to buy power from outside.

This he said had resulted in shortage of power and while the city was facing power cuts ranging from 2-4 hours a day,in districts it was around six hours and in villages the power cuts were upto 8 hours a day.He said reports from several districts across all the regions indicate that the state was reeling under darkness and even for agriculture the government is not able to give power in a systematic manner. It had promised nine hours during elections but now it was not able to supply even for 7 hours in two shifts.Quoting statistics,he said the demand was around 10,000 MW a day while there was short supply of over 1300 MW.The government has to clear dues to power utilities to the extent of Rs 10,000 crore and it was not giving money for new purchases.

Naidu said despite severe drought TDP government had supplied power in a systematic manner and people knew when power would come and go and accordingly they could plan their schedule but now the power utilities were resorting to unscheduled power cuts.
